From the mouth of babes

The other night Brian and I were at a neighbor's house for a Bible study. We were just sitting there on the couch when the host's 3-year-old son looked at Brian and asked, "Why you mad?" Brian tried to tell him that he wasn't mad, that was just his normal expression. I assured the kid that I had often been mislead by Brian's seemingly angry countenance and that he really was not mad.

The boy seemed skeptical.

To be honest, I'm a little skeptical at times as well.

Was this a German-speaking neighbor? Did that conversation take place in German?

You're missing the point. It's an anecdote. A short, funny story. The other details are irrelevant. But you're pretty imaginative, so you can just make up additional details. :)

I myself have been confused by this expression. In fact as a young lad I think he had the same expression in all the family photos...

I may be struck down for saying this (at least I should be) but those glorious Sonic drinks are keeping me from the mission field at the moment (not really, it also has something to do with my mother who vows to throw herself in front of the plane if I try and take her grandbabies away from her). Let me know when Austria gets a Sonic and I am there!

Hahaha.....Before getting to know Brian and how ridiculously funny he is, I used to be a little intimidated by the "mad face".

Rush, tell them you're not mad, just inscrutable. That's unerforschlich to your German-speaking Nachbarin.
