The good, the bad and the lovely

THE GOOD: The apartment is furnished! Generally, when you move into an apartment in Austria you have to buy all of the furnishings -- even the light fixtures and the kitchen cabinets. (In Vienna, almost all of the apartments come with a furnished kitchen, so that was a nice surprise.) Our apartment, however, is fully furnished. Including...

A bed, dresser and schrank (like an armoire) for the bedroom,

EVERYTHING we need in the kitchen...

A refrigerator with freezer, This may seem normal, but compare the size of our refrigerator and freezer to the size of the fridge at the apartment where we are currently staying (pictured to the right or below of the photo of our fridge). The size in the second picture is much more common. (Notice the tiny freezer.)

A dishwasher (a little on the small size, but a great size for us), oven and stove, a counter (almost free of appliances) and cupboards,

And a washing machine (yes, it's in the kitchen).

Plus, look a this cute little booth in the kitchen!

The landlord should bring over a microwave next week. There's a little stand for it attached to the wall, so it won't have to take up counter space! (I really like counter space.)

THE BAD: We're not wild about the living room furnishings. The couch isn't really our style and there's a large built-in desk with a record player. (We would be happy about the record player if we had brought our records, but we got rid of them. Who would have thought that we would have a record player!) Also, the lights are kind of strange. Can you see them hanging down over the coffee table? But really -- even this isn't so bad. I just had to come up with something for the catchy title.

THE LOVELY: Take a look at this view! This is the view from the balcony off of our bedroom. Trust me, the pictures don't do it justice.

And just in case you don't have the theme song to The Jeffersons stuck in your head yet -- check out the clip for the upcoming sequel -- The Rushers.

I must say that the movie was just wonderful. I sure wish I was creative enough to make a movie. Oh well. Your apartment looks just lovely. Is there an elevator or do you have to walk up all 7 flights of stairs?

Yes, it is a very nice video, and the pictures are quite nice as well. Still, I have my concerns.

Your apartment is great! I'm impressed! And hey, you can always cover the couch!

The video was awesome! Jaxon really liked it too!

I'm still having trouble wrapping my mind around the idea that one must buy their own light fixtures and cabinetry for an apartment. That's crazy talk!

That kitchen is better than the one we had when we lived in OKC--and it wasn't even a ghetto apartment! I'm seriously impressed. I'm also impressed with the video--I had to provide my own soundtrack, but that just made the experience more personal.

I think you need to trade that couch for one of those groovy low, square, vinyl dealies that would go with the groovy light fixture and the built-ins. Then you'd have the swingin'est pad in town.

I'm glad the video is a hit. I had a lot of fun making it.

Candace: Yes, there is an elevator -- we won't be walking up 7 flights! (I don't think Sharkdog would take the stairs -- sometimes he refuses to use the stairs and goes straight to the elevator.)

Suzanne: I think we're going to have to cover the couch!

Gina: The bedroom is still missing the light fixtures, so we may be buying some after all. I love the kitchen -- it's better than any we had in OKC.

I had the schrank once. Nasty business, that! Doctor gave me a topical cream that did the trick. -- Erik

I'm glad you guys are doing well in Vienna so far and settling in. The apartment looks very nice! Are you going to the women's retreat in Filzmoos, Austria in October? You should.... it is absolutely fantastic and it would be good to see you and any of the other ladies on your team. You should think about it.

Erik - Thanks for the link!

Mom - Since we don't have to buy furniture we have more time on our hands than expected. Language courses start until September -- I'm sure we'll have plenty to do then.

April - Last week Amanda and I were trying to figure out the date and location of the ladies retreat. I'm going to email you for more details.

Posting the following on behalf of my German friend Dieter:

"Clearly you barbaric Americans are unsuited for the uber-chic styles of Austrian design. The sofa ist wunderbar and the hanging lights would give my monkey, Klaus, the perfect perch from which to judge you. Your apartment has become tiresome. NOW WE DANCE!"

It always entertains me when there is a judgmental monkey in the house.
