From the sewing room

I've discovered my new favorite fabric shop. I told you a while back about a textile shop outside of Vienna which is one of the only places you can find affordable fabric. But I found another place that's much closer to home and much better organized. Only thing is, it's not really a textile shop. It's Ikea.

I was already planning on picking up a fleece blanket or two at Ikea to use for sewing. But then I saw this jacket on Flickr made from hippo fabric from Ikea. I know what you're thinking. Hippos? But it's cute. Did you look at the jacket? Go ahead, take a look. But come right back.

...

See, it's cute. The person who made the jacket said that she used a duvet from the kid's bedding section for the material. Genius! Turns out, I wasn't able to find the bedding, but I found the same pattern in pre-cut fabric. So I took that (in lime green and in red!) and I also picked out several duvets. And all of the fabric came out to about $2 to $3 per yard. And some even cheaper than that. I have all sorts of ideas brewing for these fabrics -- but I have to wait for my patterns to arrive.

In the meantime, I've been practicing with smaller projects. I am still a beginner, after all. I made this lovely tote from the Simple Tote pattern in Amy Carol's Bend-the-Rules Sewing book.

Last month, I made these cloth shoes for my niece Emmy based on the tutorial at Stardust Shoes. They turned out nice, but there were a few things about the pattern that I wasn't wild about.

Luckily, I found a similar tutorial at Bare Maked that I like a lot. And since the shoes I made for Emmy were a little too big, I'll get to try again with this new pattern. (This pattern is much smaller, so I think these may be too small for Emmy. They were a practice pair anyways. I'll enlarge the pattern when I make her pair.)

And the best thing about this tutorial -- the shoes are reversible!

I thought you were on crack when I read the bit about a hippo fabric jacket, but it is shockingly cute! I would totally wear that jacket, especially in red, black, or gray. And the reversible shoes are really cute, too. I'm impressed!

I clicked on the Ikea link and I have a question. See the list of Ikea-bearing countries in Europe. See how they have the country name written in the native language and the English version in parenthises? Why does Portugal have (Portugal) after it--it's spelled identically in both places, but France doesn't have (France) after it? I think Ikea needs to hire me to be their professional nit-picker, uh, I mean Editor, so such things will not occur in the future.

Go ahead and call me a dork. I can take it.

I love Ikea fabric! (Haven't seen the hippo fabric before though - very awesome.)

Love you reversible baby shoes - they look so soft and comfy! I'm one of the Maked girls, would it be okay if we used your picture in a gallery of the shoes we hope to do? Credited with your name and blog link, of course!

YAY! These are the first shoes I've seen someone make with my tutorial and I LOVE them! The fleecy stuff looks super cozy. This makes me so happy.

love the bag...super cute. yes, I need your services for my blog header!! I tried your e-mail link, but it was trying to open it in a different e-mail server than I use, so it was to no avail. you can e-mail me...I don't want to type it all out, but it's my last name and then the first letter of each of these real names (husband, me, daughter) at yahoo dot com. :) I hope that makes sense!

Gina - You're way to observant. I'm a little paranoid now. I hope you don't print out my blog posts, grab a red pen and go to town.

burrito - Yay! I would love for you to show the shoes around.

rhiannon - Thanks so much for making the tutorial! I love the shoes and they're sew fun to make.

Lori - Thanks! I like how the bag has a small handle that you can loop the long handle through so you're only carrying one handle. That Amy Karol -- she's so clever!
